Prof. Dr. Steffen Staab, director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, has been elected as an ELLIS Fellow in the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) Program on Semantic, Symbolic, and Interpretable Machine Learning.
The ELLIS Fellows program recognizes leading scientists within the European AI and Machine Learning (ML) community. As an ELLIS Fellow, Steffen Staab will contribute to advancing data-driven AI research in Europe and assist in evaluating future projects and fellow nominations.
The Semantic, Symbolic, and Interpretable Machine Learning program that nominated Prof. Staab focuses on ML approaches operating at the human abstraction level, using methods such as graph neural networks, neuro-symbolic programming, and inductive logic programming. The program aims to foster collaboration with related fields, including natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and geometric deep learning.
In addition to his role at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, prof. Staab is co-spokesperson of the SimTech Cluster of Excellence, Cyber Valley Endowed Chair for Analytic Computing, Co-Speaker of IRIS - Reflecting Intelligent Systems, Chair for Web and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence, and trustee of the Web Science Trust. He is also a member of the ELLIS Unit Stuttgart, led by SimTech's Andreas Bulling and Ingo Steinwart, both also ELLIS Fellows.
